Lunch and Learn: "Environmental Racism, Injustice and Inequity”
to
USC-Lancaster Native American Studies Center 119 South Main Street, Lancaster, South Carolina 29720
This informational presentation by Claudia Heinemann-Priest, instructor of English, Catawba and Native American Literature at USC Lancaster, will focus on environmental racism, a phrase and concept used to describe environmental injustice that occurs within a racialized context both in practice and policy.
Environmental injustice refers to communities and natural environments that are unsafe and unproductive, due to norms and values, rules, regulations, behaviors, policies and decisions that do not support sustainability, whereas a community of environmental justice is one in which both cultural and biological diversity are respected, and where there is equal access to institutions and ample resources to grow and prosper.
