Living History Saturdays in February “By Way of the Back Door”

"By Way of the Back Door" is a living history program that reflects on the way of life for the enslaved people who endured on the Bratton plantation during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Each Saturday in February, a unique program at Historic Brattonsville focuses on the African American community’s cultural contributions and the journey from enslavement to today.
Schedule
Feb. 3, "Daily Life of Enslaved People." Ongoing activities center on food rations, hair care, clothing and laundry. Learn how people of African descent were involved in the American Revolution. Guided Battlefield Tours at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Feb. 10, "Trades and the Skilled Enslaved People." Woodworking and natural dyeing techniques are ongoing activities. Black history site tours at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Feb. 17, "Agriculture." Cooking for the planter class and running the historic cotton gin are ongoing activities. Black history site tours at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Feb. 24, "Arts and Cultural Contributions." Living history interpreters focus on African American culture through storytelling, toys and games. Barbeque cooking is the featured activity. Black history site tours at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Admission is Adults $8; Seniors $7; Youth $5. Free for Culture & Heritage Members and children under the age of three.
