Celebrating The People of Mitchelville
to
Fish Haul Creek Park 229 Beach City Road, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina 29926
The Heritage Library Foundation will be completing its first collaboration with the students of Clemson University Pan-African Studies Department, and will celebrate with a program to recognize the organizations who participated with us, including Ancestry.com, the Mitchelville Preservation Project, and the historic churches of Hilton Head Island. The Heritage Library, with funding from the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry and the Bargain Box, performed research to discover the names of the original inhabitants of Mitchelville and worked with a local surveyor to determine the location of a house and some of the streets that still exist today. The Clemson University students were part of a creative inquiry research class titled Reconstructing Historic Mitchelville: Using the Basic Tools of Sociology and Genealogy to Gain a Better Knowledge of Life in an Historic Black Community. The program will be Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 4:00 at Fish Haul Park. Attendees will be able to see the outline of one of the original houses and the streets of the village. The public is invited.
