At the Barnabas Horse Foundation, nestled in rural Georgetown County, something extraordinary happens every day. Under the guidance of Sue McKinney, winner of the 2023 Who Powers You Local Hero award, horses become healers, companions and catalysts for change in the lives of trauma survivors.
McKinney, a survivor of trauma herself, discovered the therapeutic power of horses during her teenage years. “The barn was my safe place,” she shares, emphasizing how animals provided a sanctuary during her most challenging times, sowing the seeds for what would become the Barnabas Horse Foundation.
Today, McKinney and her team offer more than just a chance to interact with horses. They delve into the science of healing, focusing on neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to adapt and change. “It’s not just about petting horses,” she says. “We’re building relationships, teaching the principles of interaction and applying this knowledge to human connections.”
The foundation caters to a diverse group of clients, including veterans and first responders, offering personalized therapy sessions. Each year, approximately 350 individuals find solace and healing within the barn’s comforting walls.
The statewide Who Powers You award, established in 2022 by South Carolina’s electric cooperatives, spotlights local heroes like McKinney who profoundly impact and uplift those around them. The recognition includes a $2,500 prize.
“This award significantly boosts our mission at the Barnabas Horse Foundation,” McKinney says. “Much like Barnabas in the Bible, known as the ‘son of encouragement,’ our foundation aims to support and empower trauma survivors through innovative equine therapy methods.”
Erin Powell, an award judge and creative director at York Electric Cooperative, admires McKinney’s dedication. “Sue’s commitment to equine therapy for trauma recovery is truly inspiring. She embodies what it means to be a community hero,” Powell says.
Nominations for the next Who Powers You contest are open until July 31 at ecsc.org/whopowersyou. Eligible nominees include cooperative members or those positively impacting cooperative-served areas.
