Carolina Day

Carolina Day celebrates the American victory at the Battle of Sullivan’s Island on June 28, 1776. On this day forces under Colonels William Moultrie and William Thomson repelled assaults by the Royal Navy and the British Army. The first Carolina Day was celebrated in 1777, and the Palmetto Society and the South Carolina Historical Society continue the commemoration today.

This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. C.L. “Chip” Bragg. Bragg is a native of Sumter, South Carolina. He grew up in Augusta, Georgia, graduated from Georgia Southern College and obtained his medical doctorate from the Medical College of Georgia. Bragg’s lifelong passion for American history has resulted in the publication of two books about the War Between the States: Distinction in Every Service: Brigadier General Marcellus A. Stovall, C.S.A. (White Mane, 2001) and the critically acclaimed Never for Want of Powder: The Confederate Powder Works in Augusta, Georgia (University of South Carolina Press, 2007) of which he is coauthor. Since 2001 he has published more than thirty articles and book reviews in historical magazines and journals. In November 2013 the University of South Carolina Press released Crescent Moon over Carolina: William Moultrie and American Liberty, Bragg’s biography of South Carolina’s preeminent patriot and two-term governor.

The Washington Light Infantry, Waccamaw Light Artillery, and the Charleston Community Band will participate in the day’s events.
