The Charleston Museum is pleased to present its spring lecture series in conjunction with "The Art of Abstraction: Modernism in Quilting," currently on display in the Historic Textiles Galleries. In conversation with Curator of Historic Textiles Virginia Theerman, mixed media artist Katy Mixon will speak on her practice of artistic sustainability, her quilting inspirations and her engagement with the museum’s collections to fuel her work.
Mixon is a visual artist working in painting, sculpture and quilting. She earned an Master of Fine Arts from The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a Bachelor of Arts from Davidson College. She is an alumna of The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Mixon is the recipient of a 2023 Griffith-Reyburn Award, 2023 SC Arts Commission Grant, 2023 South Arts Grant and a Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation Award. She was a finalist for the William and Dorothy Yeck Young Painters Award and a VCUarts Fountainhead Fellowship.
Mixon has worked as an artist-in-residence at the Gibbes Museum of Art in South Carolina, The Hambidge Center in Georgia, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center, in Nebraska, Byrdcliffe Art Colony in New York, and AICAD Studio Practice Residency in New York..
