"Smokin' Ed" Currie takes a bite out of a world record
Ed Currie is the president of the Puckerbutt Pepper Company in Fort Mill. He holds a Guinness World Record for his Carolina Reaper, the world's hottest pepper. In this video, Ed shows us what happens when you try a pepper that's 300 times hotter than a jalapeno.
Ed Currie is one of the rare individuals who can chow down on a Carolina Reaper and not wind up on the floor gasping in pain. Even noted “chilihead” blogger Ted “The Fire-Breathing Idiot” Barrus fell victim to the reaper’s “horrific burn” when he first tried eating a whole pod. (See the video above, but we warn you—it gets ugly.)
Violent reactions to the world’s hottest pepper are common, Currie says, and he advises against eating whole pods if you aren’t experienced with superhot peppers.
“Everybody who has tried to eat one of these who is not used to eating superhot peppers has rejected it immediately and been afoul for a good 24 hours,” he warns.
“Everybody says, ‘Wow, that’s good … Oh, my God! What did I do?’” Currie says. “You get that sweet taste, and it’s very pleasurable, but then the heat kicks in and for 20 minutes it’s just an uphill ride. There’s nothing you can do to stop it.”
