Fall meant harvesting cotton for the majority of James Island's residents during and after slavery. Thought to be extinct, the distinctive Sea Island cotton has been rediscovered, and the first crop in nearly 100 years is growing at the McLeod Plantation Historic Site! Learn more about the plant and its history. Activities include tours with Dr. Richard Porcher, an art exhibition by Gullah artist Sonja Griffin Evans, a special talk titled "Sea Island Cotton: Past, Present, and Future" with Dr. Porcher and William McLean, activities for children and more.
Tours meet at the Welcome Center and leave at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
