Chamber Music Charleston will present the eighth annual Little Mozart Circus on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Marion Square, downtown Charleston. This free, family-oriented event includes a variety of mini-performances under the main tent, interactive performance opportunities under the side tent and numerous small tents hosted by local music schools and arts organizations.
A highlight of the circus is the interactive musical experiences under the side tents, such as the Music and Arts Instrument Petting Zoo and various play-ins. Try your hand at playing a violin, trumpet, flute or any number of other instruments under the guidance of professional educators and accomplished students at the Instrument Petting Zoo. Bring your own instrument, and join the Suzuki violin or Cello Posse Play-In, where violinists and cellists of all ages are welcome participate in the fun and share the joy of playing favorite pieces with friends. Participation for the group play-in activities is free of charge, and advance registration is encouraged but not required. The circus main tent will feature seasoned student ensembles, including the Charleston County School of the Arts Orchestra, Charleston Children’s Chorus, Hungry Monk Fiddlers, Leonard’s Band and Lowcountry American String Orchestra.
Individual tents will be staffed by numerous music businesses and organizations, including Chamber Music Charleston, Music and Arts, Jazz Artists of Charleston, Hungry Monk Music, Gawkick Violins, Leonard School of Music and Charleston County Schools Fine Arts Department.
The Little Mozart Circus is one of the educational components of Chamber Music Charleston, which also presents Classical Kids Concerts throughout the season. Chamber Music Charleston was founded in 2006 and presents over 65 classical concerts each season. Their special 10th anniversary season also includes House Concerts in the historic homes of downtown Charleston and grand residences of Kiawah and Seabrook Island, Ovation Concerts with nationally acclaimed guest artists joining musicians of CMC, and Church Concerts on Edisto Island and Hilton Head Island. The season concludes with a return performance at New York City’s historic Carnegie Hall on May 4, 2017.
