MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – In a groundbreaking moment for Richland Northeast High School, quarterback Will Wilson has been honored as the 2024 S.C. Mr. Football. The announcement came Saturday, during halftime of the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl in Myrtle Beach. This recognition builds upon the Cavaliers’ storied football history and highlights Wilson’s outstanding athletic and academic prowess.
Wilson makes history as the first Richland Northeast recipient of the award since its inception in 1995. Over 10 games, he compiles 2,482 passing yards and 22 touchdowns, while adding 1,144 rushing yards and 20 more scores.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” Wilson says. “I owe so much to my coaches, teammates and father for their encouragement and support through every challenge.”
Wilson also excels in the classroom, boasting a 4.6 grade point average. He plays under the guidance of his father, head coach Walt Wilson, who praises his son’s commitment and humility. Wilson’s decision to skip the Shrine Bowl in favor of bowl practice at N.C. State demonstrates his focus on the next stage of his football journey.
Wilson was one of five finalists for the state’s top honor. Joining him in contention for the trophy were Westside quarterback Cutter Woods, Belton-Honea Path running back Marquise Henderson, Rock Hill wide receiver Malik Clark and Gaffney offensive lineman Shedrick Sarratt. Each finalist distinguished himself on and off the field, but it was Wilson’s versatile skill set and leadership that propelled him to the pinnacle of South Carolina high school football.
Editor’s note: South Carolina’s electric cooperatives are the primary sponsors of the Mr. Football award. The South Carolina Athletics Coaches Association organizes the event and is responsible for the selection of South Carolina’s Mr. Football award.
