Virtual Lunch and Learn: "The Archaeology of Charraw Town in the Catawba Indian Nation”
to
USC-Lancaster Native American Studies Center 119 South Main Street, Lancaster, South Carolina 29720
The reinterpretation of a 1756 map of the Catawba Nation led archaeologists from the Research Laboratories of Archaeology at UNC-Chapel Hill to investigate archaeological site 38YK17, the likely remains of Charraw Town.
This presentation from Dr. Mary Beth Fitts of the North Carolina Office of State Archaeology discusses the history of the Charraw community and describes the results of the 2011 fieldwork, highlighting the role of settler colonialism in the Charraw’s status as Native refugees and the ways Catawba-Charraw women organized their economic activities, creating enduring social networks.
