Virtual Lunch and Learn: "Artificial Heads and the Market"

Lander University Professor Bill Ramsey will present “Artificial Heads and the Market: How Traditional Approaches to Hunting Affected the Origins of the Yamasee War," during a Virtual Lunch and Learn Friday, August 20, noon to 1 p.m.
This presentation revisits one of the principal arguments put forward in Ramsey’s book, “The Yamasee War: A Study of Culture, Economy, and Conflict in the Colonial South”: that market influence acted as a stressor in the Anglo-Indian trade relationship and thus contributed to the outbreak of the Yamasee War in 1715. Placing Native American hunting strategies and environmental factors at the forefront of his inquiry, Ramsey suggests that traditional indigenous approaches to hunting also played a significant role in the development of market oriented exchange relations with Carolina. In the process, he offers a scathing criticism of himself.
