The South Carolina State Museum's weekendlong celebration of eclipse activities, presented by SCE&G, will take place throughout the entire museum with special exhibitions, planetarium and 4D shows and a special appearance by Apollo 16 astronaut Gen. Charles Duke, all leading up to solar eclipse totality which occurs at 2:41 p.m. on Aug. 21.
Guests will have access to the entire museum, including 4 floors of exhibit galleries featuring South Carolina art, science and technology, natural history and cultural history; special astronomy and space exhibits, including a state museum-curated exhibit on Apollo 16 astronaut Gen. Charles Duke; special eclipse education pop-up stations and tours; free solar eclipse glasses provided by SCE&G; access to a special BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Planetarium eclipse show, "Shadows from Space," where guests can experience a total solar eclipse and what causes this celestial display before it happens; access to the Robert B. Arial Telescope Gallery and Boeing Observatory; free access to the Rev. Solomon Jackson Jr. 4D theater; free admission to the museum's blockbuster exhibit, "Savage Ancient Seas."
Monday will include a special appearance by South Carolina native and Apollo 16 astronaut, Gen. Charles Duke. Duke was the 10th man to walk on the moon during the Apollo 16 mission in 1972. In addition, Duke was also the Capsule Communicator during the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Guests will also have a reserved common area outside of the museum for safe viewing of the total solar eclipse with full access to parking, restrooms and water. Solar eclipse viewing glasses provided by SCE&G will be free for all guests.
Daily general admission tickets for Friday, Saturday and Sunday are $5 for museum members and $12 (children) to $15 (adults) for nonmembers. General admission tickets for Monday are $29.95 for adults and seniors ($23.95 for members) and $24.95 for children 3 to 12 ($19.95 for members). Special group pricing is available.
