“The President’s Own” United States Marine Band’s mission is to perform for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. Founded in 1798 by an Act of Congress, the Marine Band is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization.
Today, “The President’s Own” is celebrated for its role at the White House and its dynamic public performances, which total more than 500 annually. This tour marks the 125th anniversary of its first tour, which was led by John Philip Sousa.
“We’re excited to have such an esteemed group in Mauldin,” said Keira Kitchings, director of the Mauldin Cultural Center. “There’s so much history and culture behind each of these works that you can’t help but feel connected to them and grounded in them.”
For the 2016 National Tour, Marine Band Director Lieutenant Colonel Jason K. Fettig has crafted a unique blend of popular and patriotic works along with virtuoso solos, orchestral transcriptions and original music for concert band. The program opens with a fanfare and a march, and concludes with John Philip Sousa’s iconic “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” followed by A Salute to the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
The Office of Cultural Affairs leverages the arts for the economic benefit of the City and its citizens, and gives all citizens and visitors the ability to experience and participate in artistic and cultural activities in an effort to continually develop a more vibrant community.
