Teeing Off to Cure SMA

The 2nd Annual Teeing Off to Cure SMA Dinner and Golf Tournament will take place Oct. 25–26 at Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

All net proceeds from this event, which is open to golfers and non-golfers alike, will benefit Cure SMA, the world’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing research, advocacy, and support for individuals and families affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Funds raised will help further Cure SMA’s mission to empower everyone impacted by SMA to lead independent, successful, and fulfilling lives.

SMA is a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disease. Historically, it was the leading genetic cause of death in children under age two. Thanks in large part to the work of Cure SMA and its partners, there have been tremendous advances over the past decade. Today, there are four FDA-approved drug and gene therapies that can meaningfully slow or alter the progression of SMA, and newborn screening is now available in all 50 states, allowing many children to be identified before symptoms appear.

Despite this progress, significant challenges and unmet medical and care needs remain—particularly for the approximately 90% of individuals with SMA who were born before newborn screening and gene therapy were available.
