The Museum of York County is participating in national Take a Child Outside week. Rain or shine, the natural history museum will host a celebration of being outdoors Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A spectacular live butterfly release is scheduled for noon, weather permitting. Outdoor explorers can take part in a guided scavenger hunt and hike along the 3/4-mile Piedmont Trail (the trail has some steps). Check out the museum’s Monarch Waystation to watch for monarch butterflies as they stop by and linger in a sustaining habitat on their incredible journey winging south. Meet York County's Beekeepers, York County Master Gardeners and other outdoor exhibitors. Admission to the event is free with museum admission.
Dr. Steve Fields, curator of natural history at the Museum of York County, will present two 30-minute talks about his new book from 10:30 to 11 a.m. and from 1:30 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, in the museum’s classroom and will be available for book signings. Fields’ newly published book, “In Your Nature: Ponderings of a Carolina Piedmont Naturalist,” commemorates the curator’s 30th anniversary with the museum. The book is a compilation of articles written by Fields that appeared in YC Magazine over the last 10 years. “In Your Nature: Ponderings of a Carolina Piedmont Naturalist” includes original illustrations by Culture and Heritage Museums’ Stephen Crotts and is available for purchase in the museum store.

Anne Springs Close Greenway will be open on Friday, Sept. 23, from 7 to 10 p.m. for an evening of outdoor fun. The drop-in program includes night hikes, games and interactive outdoors festivities. Finish the night with a s’more for only $1. Free for members, $5 for non-members. Anne Springs Close Greenway’s activities will take place in the Field Trial Barn, Adventure Road Entrance, 835 Springfield Parkway, Fort Mill.
Rock HIll Parks, Recreation and Tourism is sponsoring a free outdoor event on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 3 p.m. Meeting at the Novant Health BMX Supercross Track at Riverwalk, outdoor educators will give pointers on trail riding before riding the easy bike trails. This event is free and located at Novant Health Supercross Track, 1307 Riverwalk Parkway, Rock Hill.
