Rhiannon Giddens brings her latest musical collaboration, “Swimming in Dark Waters: Other Voices of the American Experience,” to the McCelvey Center on Feb. 27. Giddens teams with Bhi Bhiman and Leyla McCalla for the tour to honor Black History Month with the stories and music of people of color. The trio’s tour will be embedded with folk songs from the past and present.
As founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Rhiannon Giddens’ escalating success includes various collaborative musical projects that have set her on course as a contemporary showstopper with a powerhouse voice. A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Giddens attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she performed as a lyric coloratura soprano. In February 2015, Giddens released her debut solo album, “Tomorrow is My Turn.” Giddens has performed for the McCelvey Center’s Southern Sound Series twice before with the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops. She returns at her own request to honor Black History Month with the new “Swimming in Dark Waters: Other Voices of the American Experience” tour.
