This not-to-be-missed concert on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m. in Gage Hall is the second in Porto's 2025/2026 series.
Charleston-based Porto Seguro will mesmerize you with the infectious rhythms of samba, the sophisticated melodies of bossa nova and the vibrant energy of choro and MPB. Get ready for a dynamic set that blends popular Brazilian favorites with lesser-known treasures, guaranteed to make your toes tap and your heart sing.
Alva Anderson's captivating voice is at the heart of the band, promising a moving performance.The band boasts a lineup of talented musicians, including Susan Conant on flute, John Holenko on mandolin, Tom Noren on guitar, John Kennedy on bass and Bryce Waldron-Noren on drums.
The performance will feature special guest Andrew Finn McGill, an internationally acclaimed multi-genre instrumentalist praised by legendary Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira (known for his work with Chick Corea and Miles Davis). Moreira has lauded McGill's "love and authenticity" for the music.
McGill, a Fulbright fellow, North Carolina Arts Council fellow, and an award-winning composer, brings his masterful command of fiddle and violin styles from around the world. Having lived in Rio de Janeiro, he is deeply immersed in choro music and promises a performance that is both "playful and light, yet soulful and passionate".
