Dr. David W. Dangerfield of University of South Carolina Salkehatchie, presents “Shades of Gray: Non-White Confederate Soldiers”
This project focuses on men with degrees of African and Indigenous ancestry who used military service in the Confederacy to strengthen their claims to whiteness and the citizenship that came with it. During this Lunch and Learn, Dangerfield will examine their experiences and the strategies they employed to help navigate liminal circumstances as “free people of color” in the late-antebellum and Civil War-era South Carolina Lowcountry.
