“Return to the Sea: A New Chapter for Spirit of South Carolina”
Horry County Museum 805 Main Street , Conway, South Carolina 29526
The Horry County Museum presents “Return to the Sea: A New Chapter for Spirit of South Carolina” by historian Carin Bloom on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m.
Spirit of South Carolina is a traditionally-rigged wooden sailing ship that was built and launched in Charleston between 2001 and 2007. Built to evoke the gaff-rigged pilot boats of days past, Spirit carries centuries of maritime history and heritage, embodying ships like Frances Elizabeth and other schooners that plied the waters of Charleston's harbor.
As a modern, larger vessel, Spirit is the platform from which families, students and lifelong learners participate in experiential education modules that develop teamwork and leadership skills, as well as practical sailing capabilities. With a new organization and a renewed focus, Education and Programs Director Bloom is excited to share how Spirit's mission is moving forward, including the debut of our newest SC250 Commission-backed program "Harbor of Revolution," a program that focuses on Charleston Harbor's participation in the War for Independence.
The program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street in Conway. For more information, call (843) 915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov.
