The 12th annual Myrtle Beach International Film Festival (MBIFF), billed as “The East Coast’s answer to the Sundance Film Festival,” will be held April 19-22.
Winner of prestigious international and national awards, such as “Top 25 Film Festivals to Submit to in the World” by Movie Maker Magazine and recognition as one of the best film festivals in the world by Film International, the MBIFF guarantees a phenomenal line up of films on the big screen this year.
The festival has moved to its new location, the Market Common Grand 14 Theater. Film Festival Week runs April 17 through the close of the festival April 22.
The MBIFF’s reputation as one of the top venues for showcasing feature films, documentaries and short films has helped the festival grow, says founder and director Jerry Dalton. “While we are proud of how international the festival has become, the beauty of expanding MBIFF over the years has also opened a submission category for local and regional student and budding filmmakers, in addition to the outstanding global films we enjoy," he says. "It simply is a wonderful opportunity for exposure for our community and artists.”
Attending this year’s event will be filmmakers, industry professionals and actors from featured films, short films and documentaries, all of whom will interact with the audience in informal “Q&A” sessions following each film. On Thursday, April 19, from 4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., there will be an open-forum discussion with distinguished filmmakers and industry professionals.
Two added films will screen April 17 and 18 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at The Grand 14 Stone Theatre. These films, called primers or prescreenings, are "My Sweet Misery" and "The Sandman." "My Sweet Misery" was filmed in Myrtle Beach by writer/director/producer Matthew Jordan, who will be in attendance with his film, which stars Anna Chlumsky and a few other recognizable names. Q&A discussion and food will follow at Tupelo Honey Cafe. On April 18, there will be the screening of "The Sandman," which is the only film in the MBIFF to score a perfect 100 on all seven judges' score sheets.
On Wednesday, April 19, the official MBIFF begins, with screenings starting at 4 p.m. There will be a break in the action from 8:45 to 9:45 p.m., with dinner provided for ticket holders in the lobby of The Grand 14; food and tea will be provided by Little Pigs BBQ.
Over 80 percent of last year's films had at least one, if not many, people who were attached to the film attend the festival. The interactive setting makes for a unique film-going experience.
Thursday night is a meet-and-greet and networking event, with pizza at Ultimate California Pizza Kitchen. In addition, Brass Tap will host an event on Friday, April 21, with food provided by The Brass Tap and beer from New South Brewery. On Saturday evening, April 22, there will be awards, red carpet photos and the after-party, which will take place at Co Sushi, which is attached to The Grand 14 Theater. All the food and beer by New South on Friday and after-award gathering is included for the price of the ticket.
Tickets can be purchased individually for $10 per two-hour film block or an All-Access Pass for $50, which includes all films and all events, available via Paypal at MyrtleBeachFilmFestival.com or call (843) 497-0220.
