Charleston Museum 360 Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina 29403
Join Quilter Artist and Keeper of the Culture, Cookie Washington for a Gullah Rag Rug class. Washington will provide an interactive demonstration of Rag Rug technique honoring Gullah artist Sharon Cooper-Murray “The Gullah Lady.” Passed down generation by generation, this technique traditionally combined feed and grain sacks with rag strips to make unique quilts.
This is a 4-hour “no sew” class using special tools. Participants will each receive their own 9×9 inch square of burlap and will also contribute to a community rug. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch and/or snacks.
Tickets are all-inclusive and include base fabric, sub-cut African print fabrics and neutral color muslin or broadcloth. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring additional bits of clothing or scrap fabric. All necessary tools will be provided for the workshop.
Cost is $75 for Museum members or $105 for non-members. Registration is required.
Register online or call (843) 722-2996 ext. 235.
