Edgefield Town Square 106 Courthouse Square , Edgefield, South Carolina 29824
Edgefield Arts With A Heart Market will host a market on May 20,10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Edgefield Town Square. There will be an array of local artists and crafters, as well as entertainment. All vendor application fees will be donated to a local non-profit. The non-profit recipient for this month will be the Oakley Park Museum.
Oakley Park is a lovely neoclassical home completed in 1835 by Captain Daniel Bird. In 1846, Oakley Park was the final site where Company D of the Palmetto Regiment gathered before leaving for the Mexican War. In 1876, while the home of lawyer and former General, Martin W. Gary, it was the location of the final speech made by Wade Hampton before the impactful gubernatorial election that November. The property became a park and house museum in 1941, through the vision of the Town of Edgefield, Gary’s nephew, Governor John G. Evans and local resident, Sophie Fair. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places for the Town of Edgefield Historic District in 1972.
The house’s architecture includes a large double-height porch, central hallways and woodwork finished by fine artisans of the time. Formal rooms on the first floor are adorned with gilt cornices, handsome drapes, plaster ceiling medallions and carved mantels. The furniture collection contains pieces dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, the house museum is open to the public and available for educational tours, teasand private events, thanks to dedicated volunteers and the generosity of individuals.
We believe this event will be a win-win for the Oakley Park Museum and for the artists, merchants and community. We are always looking for vendors, volunteers and local talent. Vendor applications are available on the Edgefield Arts With A Heart Market Facebook page under the group tab. Please click on the application date for the event that you wish to be a part of.
