The Dawes Family and the Reform of Citizenship
to
USC-Lancaster Native American Studies Center 119 South Main Street, Lancaster, South Carolina 29720
When people think of Henry Dawes, they think of the Dawes Act and see him as a misguided Indian reformer. By examining his family and their role in various reform movements from the Civil War through the end of the 19th century, it demonstrates how he and his family saw themselves as advocates for citizenship and not Indian reform, reshaping how we view the Dawes Act and its effects.
