The annual event will feature a special centennial celebration of South Carolina artist Guy Lipscomb along with live art demonstrations, guided behind-the-scenes tours of the museum's art storage areas, live music, hands-on activities and art exhibits.
Art Day will feature the opening of a new exhibition, Guy Lipscomb: A Centennial Celebration, in the Community Gallery. This exhibit includes highlights of Lipscomb's work in the Museum's collection from theĀ 1990s through 2009, as well as material from his archive and celebrates the unique contributions of this artist in the 100th anniversary year of his birth.
For guests looking to take home a piece of Lipscomb art, there will be an art sale to benefit the South Carolina State Museum Foundation, continuing Lipscomb's legacy of support for the State Museum.
Art Day will feature special guided behind-the-scenes tours of the museum's art storage areas, which includes more than 4,000 works of art dating between 1590 to present and a variety of live demonstrations in which guests get an up close and personal look at how artists make their visions come to life. Metal sculptor, Herman Thompson will be working onsite in the Lipscomb Art Gallery next to his large installation Wild West Town. The day will also include live plein air painting demonstrations from members of About Face, a group representing a wide range of ages and abilities and demonstrations of printmaking, sculpture, and painting by South Carolina artists.
