Cover of the year

Guard your garden
David Clark’s humorous take on gardening for the cover of the March 2014 Lawn and Garden issue (right) won Second Place in the Best Illustration category. His illustration for the accompanying feature story, “Stand your ground,” earned the Third Place award.
When the Cooperative Communicators Association (CCA) announced the winners of the 2015 Communications Contest, we were delighted to see some familiar names on the list of winners.
Mic Smith was named CCA Photographer of the Year for the second year in a row. The judges recognized his talent with awards in multiple categories for his recent work in South Carolina Living, including a First Place win in the Best Photo Essay competition for his coverage of the S.C. High School Rodeo Association’s state championship. “These photos were so well done,” one judge commented. "I could hear the action and feel the emotion of the people in the shots."
Smith also won Third Place in the Published Portrait category for his shot of William Barclay Hall, the man behind the Charleston Tea Plantation, and Third Place in the Best Photo Essay category for “Living history,” a study of Civil War reenactors.
Sharri Harris Wolfgang, our talented art director, won Cover of the Year honors for the February 2015 issue. Using a photo supplied by Esther Havens of Water Missions International, Wolfgang introduced readers to the work of the Charleston-based charity that supplies clean drinking water to impoverished communities around the globe.
Wolfgang and Mic Smith teamed up to win the Second Place award in the Cover of the Year competition for the May 2014 issue featuring Medal of Honor recipient Kyle Carpenter. The judges also awarded Wolfgang Third Place in the Best Use of Photos category for her body of work in South Carolina Living.
David Clark is a professional illustrator and cartoonist who brings a sense of humor and a generous dose of creativity to his work. His illustration for the cover of the March 2014 Lawn and Garden issue won Second Place in the Best Illustration category. His illustration for the accompanying feature story, “Stand your ground,” earned the Third Place award.
Mike Couick, president and CEO of The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, Inc. (ECSC), won Third Place in the Best Editorial category for his July 2014 Dialogue column, “Thinking outside the fence.”
In addition to the individual awards, the ECSC communications staff earned a Second Place award in the Corporate Public Relations category for a grassroots advocacy campaign titled “Don't let bureaucrats raise your bill.” The campaign, including a Facebook presence and mail-in comment cards, ran in several issues of South Carolina Living in 2014.
