2017 Southern Sound Series: The Suffers
to
McCelvey Center 212 East Jefferson St., York, South Carolina 29745
Rooted in the tradition of African-American gospel music, the genre of soul will rock the Lowry Family Theater stage by way of The Suffers. A 10-piece band with a horn section and the front-and-center vocals of Ms. Kam Franklin, The Suffers lay it down with fun and funk. "Spin" magazine described The Suffers as “the sort of neo-retro group you never knew music was so badly missing.” The Suffers hail from Houston, Texas, and have performed on "The Late Show," "The Daily Show," NPR’s "Tiny Desk concert," and at Newport Folk Fest and Austin City Limits Music Festival. The Suffers received 11 Houston Press Music Awards in 2015. A self-titled debut album was released in February 2016.
