The Georgetown County Museum is proud to host the Smithsonian Institution's Traveling Exhibition “Hometown Teams—How Sports Shape America” beginning at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 25, 2015. An opening parade is scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, July 25, on Front Street in Georgetown.
One of six South Carolina sites chosen, the Georgetown County Museum is hosting this exhibition sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in partnership with the Museum on Main Street program. Funding for the exhibit comes from the Smithsonian Institute, S.C. Humanities Council, and the City of Georgetown A-Tax funding.
"Our love of sports begins in our hometowns. We play them on ball fields and sandlots, on courts and on ice, in parks and playgrounds, even in the street. From pick-up games to organized leagues, millions of Americans of all ages play sports." (Smithsonian Institution) Hometown sports are more than just games--they shape our lives and unite us and celebrate who we are as Americans. The exhibit includes topics such as sports as a national obsession, types of fields of play, sideline traditions, athletic training, hometown team pride, and extreme sports.
