S.C. State Museum 301 Gervais St., Columbia, South Carolina 29201
Celebrate South Carolina’s history and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Burning of Columbia during History Day at the South Carolina State Museum and the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum. Several artifacts associated with the march will be on display, and Civil War military reenactors will be on hand demonstrating the lives of soldiers.
The day will include history discussions, live music, hands-on learning activities and special movies. Finding Freedom’s Home: Archaeology at Mitchelville will open, which tells the story of enslaved people who fled their plantations for the Union lines after Union occupation in Port Royal in November 1861. In addition, guests can see Paths of Destruction: Sherman’s Final Campaign, the S.C. Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum’s new exhibit on Sherman’s march through the Carolinas at the end of the war.
History Day is included with State Museum general admission or museum membership. The S.C. Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum’s exhibits, including Paths of Destruction, are available to the public for a separate fee. Visit scmuseum.org to learn more.
