Brent Pafford (Winthrop University, Clemson University) seeks to create a body of work that raises questions surrounding an object’s history, meaning, and potency in daily life by reproducing everyday utensils and tools used daily in the kitchen from porcelain. In doing this, the objects are exalted, preserving moments of use in time and space. The tool becomes idiosyncratic, loses practicality, and becomes a reference to the effort, labor and intended task for which the object was designed.
Monika Malewska’s (University of Texas at San Antonio, University of Manitoba) works combine the formal elegance of design with the recognizable banality of bacon, along with the surreal and absurd accompaniment of other decorative elements such as flowers, bees, butterflies, and fruits. The arrangements are playful and whimsical in a rococo fashion, but also grotesque. Her work draws subtle parallels between a decadence and frivolity evident in certain historical genres and our contemporary consumer culture.
