Christmas at Rose Hill
to
Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site 2677 Sardis Rd, Union, South Carolina 29379
Come experience the ambience of a Victorian-style Christmas at Rose Hill, home of former Gov. William Henry Gist and his family. Christmas in early Victorian times centered on family time, including a special meal, going to church and exchanging small gifts. The Gists decorated with evergreens and holly, sprucing up the house and lending a festive air to the dreary winter. In later Victorian times, people created many of the festive customs and decorations with which we are familiar today. Interpreters will lead special guided walks through the mansion. Get a feel for how Mrs. Gist and her grandchildren celebrated Christmas in the 1870s.
Refreshments—including some from recipes of the mid-1800s—will be available during and after the program in the original kitchen located behind the house.
The program is 1-4 p.m. on Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Tours will begin each day at 1 p.m. and run on the half hour through 4 p.m. On Sunday afternoon, there will be a special appearance by Father Christmas.
Tour fee: $7.50 (age 6 and older). Free with S.C. Park Passport PLUS.
