Come join us as we honor the rich legacy of the Bratton family's slaves and their descendants, who today are known as "the Seven Sacred Families," with our annual event "By the Sweat of Our Brows."
Hear some of the stories of those enslaved African-Americans who once farmed and tilled the soil "from cans to cants" (sunup to sundown) on the Bratton plantation. You can hear riveting stories such as that of Sampson "Sam" Smith, one of the Brattons' slaves. Records show that in March 1838, Dr. John S. Bratton collected a debt owed to him by a Thomas Hyde Smith. Instead of receiving cash, though, Dr. Bratton acquired "a slave named Sampson, of yellow color, about nineteen years of age." Sam remained in Bratton ownership until after the Civil War. With freedom came the ability to take a surname; Sam took the name of Smith, probably from his previous owner.
The Seven Sacred Families will also be in attendance to share the day's event and to tell their personal family stories. Powerful theatrical presentations, a church choir performance and hands-on activities will help guide visitors through the experience and history of Historic Brattonsville. Also, members of the Seven Sacred Families will lead bus tours of nearby African-American historic sites. At the end of the day's event, descendants will come together where many of them will be on hand for the traditional calling out of the names of their ancestors. Traditional Southern food will be provided by Sophia's Soul Food, and merchandise will be available for purchase.
Admission for adults is $8; seniors for $6; children from 4 to 17 years old for $4; ages 3 years old and younger for free. Members receive a $2 discount.
